Default starter connection in wrong place

i have just bought a 2003 Xterra and the engine had been replaced but stuff was never put back together. i was looking at it today and noticed the starter was on the passenger side but the wire connections are on the driver side. does anyone know why or am i ****ed. it looks like i can reroute the wires but am confused on why i need to. the engine serial number tells me it is a nissan engine for a first gen Xterra. help me please
