Default How-to: Cheap and easy Hi-Lift mount

I came up with a way to mount my new hi-lift jack today since i didn't want it just movin around in the back of my X.

Stuff I bought to mount the Hi-Lift:
  • 4 : Bronze 1/2" x 3/4" x 1" x 1/2" flange bearings
  • 2 : 3/8" - 16 x 4 carriage bolts
  • 2 : 3/8" - 16 Hex nuts
  • 2 : 3/8" - lock washers
  • 2 : 3/8" - 16 wing nuts
  • 6 : 3/8" washers

Tools:
  • Roof rack screwdriver used to take off roof rails
  • Tape measure
  • 5/8 drill bit - 3/4 would be too big, the bronze bearing would be loose
  • Drill or Drill press(what i used, makes it a lot easier)

All right, so here we go!
1.)take off roof rail crossbars and the end caps

2.)then measure 15 and 1/16" from the end of the crossbar and make a dot (its the center of the bar)

3.)Drill out the hole with 5/8 drill bit

-The bearing obviously wont fit, but using a 3/4" bit would make the bearing loose, so i put a 5/8" sanding bit into the drill press and widened it till i made the hole almost big enough for the bearing to slide in

4.)hold the cross bar and bearing in a vise and tighten till the bearing pops in

5.)then just repeat the above steps for the other three holes

6.)Once thats done, slide one of the carriage bolts through the bearings and place a lock washer and nut on the end and tighten down

7.)Then, put a washer on top of the nut and slide the hi-lift onto the bolts and put on 2 washers ( i used 2 so the wing nut sits higher) and then the wing nut

I'll have a pic tomorrow of what it looks like on my X
